Had my follow up appointment
« on: January 21, 2010, 12:46:43 PM »
Hi everyone,

I had my follow up appointment on Tuesday just gone (19th Jan) and my NS said he wasnt too sure why my symptoms had come back at this stage, they should have come back sooner if they were Chiari related. I think he thinks i'm making it up!

Anywho, he has requested another MRI for me - I go on Tues (26th Jan) and will get my results on 1st Feb.

He seems to think i have muscle weakness in my neck from the decompression and may need some phisiotherapy to help strenghthen my neck. Dont really know how this fits as my eyesight has 'gone' again, feeling dizzy and those blasted headaches are back not to mention the pain in my neck and accross my deltoids. Oh joy!

My NS said he's not heard of doing the surgery twice as the 1st time it should work. I'm pretty sure some of you have mentioned more than 1 surgery - but hey ho rollon next week and the 1st Feb!

I know of a few people that have had multiple decompression procedures. Not that it is common tho.

My symptoms came back delayed too............. there isnt enough research or expereince to make any defined decision based upon symtom return following surgery as everyones is so very different.

Keep positive.......... or at least do your best.

With regards to muscle issues.....sounds very plausible as there is a lot of muscle damage as a resutl of the surgery and it takes time for them to heal and start to work properly again....and this doesnt happen by just sitting there.............. it takes work and a specialist physio treatment.

Hi Kelly, so sorry you are starting to have symptoms again. When I went to see my N/S he told me the operation only had a 50/50 chance of being successful, there were no guarantees. It seems to me that all surgeons have different ideas and in actual fact, because it's still relatively rare, most (not all) Neuros don't have enough knowledge about it to predict exactly how each person will react to the surgery.

Hi
Im having similar problems, i had the op in May and the symptoms are starting to come back now, my surgeon said that at my age its fairly rare for the symptoms to come back so soon after surgery cos im only 19, but once you hit your mid 20's onwards the liklihood of recurrence of symptoms becomes more likely...so yet another opinion from an NS! hope all goes well for you and you have some luck from the MRI

I'm having physio to counter act the 'symptoms' - my NS sent me for another MRI asnd confirmed that my Chiari is under control - I have no decent of tonsils any more so my symptoms shouldnt exist. He believes my neck pain etc is to do with my posture and how i hold myself (after the surgery i have taken to shrugging my shoulders a lot...).

Fingers crossed it works - 1st physio app tonight.
